Clivia
Exposure

Bright, indirect light is ideal; can tolerate some shade but avoid harsh direct sunlight.

Watering frequency

Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry between waterings; water less in winter.

Feeding frequency

Feed every 2–3 weeks during growing season with a high-potassium fertilizer.

Repoting

Repot every 3–4 years or when rootbound; best done after flowering.

Description

Clivia is a striking flowering plant with bold, strap-like leaves and clusters of vibrant orange or yellow trumpet-shaped flowers. It brings a splash of colour to bright indoor spaces and is loved in the UK for its low maintenance and long-lasting blooms.

Toxic if ingested—keep out of reach of pets and children.

PLANTING

  • Use a well-draining, peat-free compost.
  • A slightly snug pot helps promote flowering.

PLANT CARE

  • Remove faded flowers and old leaves.
  • Allow a cool rest period in winter to encourage blooms.

VERVE RECOMMENDS

  1. Place in a bright, cool spot in winter to trigger flowering.
  2. Avoid moving the plant once buds appear.
  3. Don’t overpot—tight roots encourage more flowers.
  4. Water sparingly in winter for a proper dormancy.
